My mom, dad, and my sister are probably the people I hold closest to my heart. We are usually loud and chaotic together, but we keep our closeness close to our chests. Other than traveling, we would usually find ourselves watching movies or going out to dinner together. They have taught me how to be a better person, even in the face of making mistakes. I would not be the same person I am today without their help.
My independence and my confidence are two things that I know that I gained from my parents. I see the same trait in myself and my sister. My mom has always been curious, while my dad has always had the creative bone, having enjoyed writing poetry. One thing that has always stuck with me is when my dad told me that all he wanted was to see my sister and me live doing things that made us happy. And there is a poem that he would always mention called Song of Myself, by Walt Whitman, that he would always remind us to live by. I think having the feeling of having my family on my team is part of the reason I still pursue what I want.
Although he says that now, my relationship with my family has changed from when I was a kid to where I am now as a twenty-two-year-old kid. As a kid, I was still independent, but I did not realize how important it was to have your family on your side until I had left them. Now, there are days when I call my parents for fun, just to tell them about the little things in my day and listen to the little things that happened in theirs. Maintaining a relationship with my family is one of the main things I am to accomplish for the rest of my life.
